I had a realization the other day. Nothing earth shattering, and certainly nothing new. But for me it was a big ah-ha moment.
For months, I felt like I was on a plateau. In my yoga practice, in my overall fitness, in my mood, my nutrition, even in some of my other pursuits. And it seemed like every time I’d try to make headway, I had a setback. I’d try to go further in a pose and it didn’t work, or I’d go a little stronger at the gym, and get injured.
Then I had a sort of epiphany. If you’re experiencing setbacks every time you try to move forward, there’s a reason.
That simple thought set me on a new course. I started looking at those setbacks and exploring WHY they were happening. If I couldn’t get into a pose, what was I doing that made it impossible? If I got injured somewhere, what led to that? If I was feeling like I was in a rut with my mood, where was the disconnect?
And the minute I started adjusting HOW I did things, lots of other things started improving! Building strength in one part of my body allowed for improvements in other parts. Working on my range of motion allowed me to access new poses. Looking at what I was eating allowed me to make better nutrition decisions. Exploring my sources of stress gave me insight into my mood. And the process filtered out into other areas. Hobbies, continuing education, travel plans, home improvement.
So if you’re feeling stuck, step back and look at what’s actually happening. Once you put on your detective hat and start adjusting those root causes, you’ll start to see changes in places you never expected!
